Starting your day the same way (or close to it) every day has tons of health benefits besides getting you to the office on time. Whether you’re a.m. routine is made up of 2 or 3 small to-dos, or you carve out a full hour for your most meaningful items, the results of this consistency can be more powerful than you ever imagined. Let’s take a closer look:
You Focus On What You Love
By beginning your day with a plan in mind, you focus first on the activities that you love: journaling, slowly sipping a hot tea, or some mindful meditation to your favourite nature sounds. This sends positive signals to the brain to help you see the good in whatever comes your way. Remember, positive thinking is a muscle, it needs to be worked on regularly. Putting yourself in a position to see the good in your day before it gets interrupted by someone else is a great way to exercise this area of the brain. See how you feel in as little as 7 days by randomly asking yourself to name 3 good things that happened to you so far that day. This is a challenging task for most people since we tend to see what’s wrong before we acknowledge what went well. The good news: it gets easier the more you do it!
You Make Yourself A Priority
In today’s modern lifestyle, it seems like all we do is work on other people’s agendas before our own. We answer text messages as soon as we get them, check emails with every notification and put off our own goals because we ‘don’t have time’. Stop doing this! Yes, communication is important and sometimes emails need to be responded to right away. However, we all deserve to start our day with our own self-care in mind. Is that getting in a short run before work? Maybe writing that blog post you’ve been meaning to get to? Try starting your day with your own agenda, and at least no messages, emails or social media within the first 30 minutes of waking. You’ll get the power back in your own life and feel good about whatever else the day throws at you.
Bounce Back From Stress Easier
Have you noticed that when you’re having a good day, the little annoyances of life don’t seem to bother you as much? Although we can’t control what happens to us all the time, we can control our reactions. When you start your morning off with a stress-free routine, you build up your resiliency for the rest of the day. Even better news? The more you start your day on your terms and in a positive direction, the less and less stressful and frustrating things seem to be. To think that your first hour awake has the power to shape the other 15 or so is so empowering; it’s all within your control!
The only question left is how are you going to start your tomorrow??
